Daniel Laryea AFCON: CAF picks Morocco-Nigeria referee

CAF has appointed Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea to take charge of the AFCON Morocco 2025 semi-final between hosts Morocco and Nigeria in Rabat. The match will take place on Wednesday, January 14, with kick-off set for 20:00 GMT at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, according to organisers.

CAF selected Laryea as centre referee for the last-four tie. He will work with an international team of officials on and off the pitch.

South Africa’s Zakhele Thusi Granville Siwela will serve as assistant referee 1. Lesotho’s Souru Phatsoane will act as assistant referee 2. Mozambique’s Arsenio Chadreque Maringule will operate as the third assistant referee.

Rwanda’s Samuel Uwikunda will serve as fourth official, according to the published appointments. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Lidya Tafesse Abebe will work as referee assessor.

VAR team confirmed for the semi-final

CAF also confirmed the video review team for the fixture. South Africa’s Abongile Tom will lead VAR duties. In addition, Tunisia’s Haythem Guirat and Kenya’s Stephen Onyango Yiembe will serve as assistant VAR officials.

Officiating in focus during AFCON Morocco 2025

The appointment comes as refereeing decisions draw increased attention at the tournament. Reuters reported that CAF opened an investigation into incidents after quarter-final matches, including disputes involving match officials.

Nigeria and Morocco will now play for a place in the final, with CAF’s designated match team overseeing the semi-final in Rabat.
